The trick to punch needling is finding the right supplies. After trying many different fabrics, we found that monks cloth works the best. We found our monks cloth and a great punch needle tool on Etsy.

HOW TO:

  • Tightly wrap a piece of bias tape around the inner embroidery hoop and sew together. This will help keep your monks cloth really tight while punch needling.

  • Trace a design onto a piece of monks cloth and place in embroidery hoop, stretch and tighten.

  • Thread the punch needle with colorful yarn and begin punching. Hold like a pen and start with the outline of the image and punch through the fabric in small stitches filling in your design. Be careful not to lift the needle too high and check your work frequently.

  • Once the punch needle is complete, unwrap the bias tape and embellish outer hoop with acrylic paint.

  • Lay a piece of felt on the back of the monks cloth and set in the embroidery hoop to display. Hot glue overhanging edges to the back to keep everything in place and for a clean look.
